Sometimes funny, sometimes bizarre and sometimes touching: Joseph Kearney revisits past mistakes, reckless behaviour, spontaneous catastrophes and premeditated self-harm to uncover why perople are so awful, including him.
Science shows us that human beings, at their core, are truly awful. We step into an experimental story space featuring participatory storytelling, projection, video and music where we are immersed in the life of Joseph: his biggest mistakes, worst memories and moments of clarity where he sets forth why people are truly awful, including him.
Revisiting past break ups, a rocky road to sobriety and just being gay, Joseph unpacks his stories as truthfully as he remembers them. But there is a catch… maybe he has the whole situation wrong? Perhaps in his darker times, he was the antihero to the story, without knowing it? Given the right to reply, the people he calls out, and the skeletons in the closet get to tell their story too. The catch? Joseph doesn ’t know who is coming to clear their name, or how its all going to pan out.
People are Awful is about forgiveness, understanding the universality of human nature and the cracks . These are stories of forgiveness repair and letting go. No longer escaping the truth but sitting with it and getting closure. We all have the power to forgive but sometimes you need to forgive yourself.
